🌱 Spirituality

It is very difficult to put into words what ‘spirituality’ actually is because it is a very personal experience. It differs from person to person, and often spirituality changes within people during their lifetime. Spirituality is not the same as having a religion or faith; a person can be spiritual without having a particular faith.

Spirituality is not something we can see; it is something we feel inside ourselves. It is about awe and wonder, asking questions, inspiration and being aware of something ‘bigger’ outside of ourselves.  At Lowerhouses CE Primary School, we believe children live up to their potential if they are happy, have fun and feel nurtured.  We value spiritual and the holistic development of the child.  As children grow in their understanding of spirituality and values are embedded they become secure enough to make mistakes and therefore move on with a spiritual learning and academic growth.

We nurture spirituality across school life by helping children:

  • Reflect on their own beliefs, values, and experiences
  • Explore life’s big questions through story, discussion, and creativity
  • Build empathy, gratitude, and hope
  • Connect with others, the world, and something greater than themselves

🧠 What Does Spirituality Look Like?

Spirituality can be expressed in many ways. In our school, you might see it in:

  • A child pausing to reflect in a quiet space
  • A class discussing what makes life meaningful
  • Artwork that explores identity, belonging, or belief
  • Moments of awe during forest school or science lessons
  • Acts of kindness, forgiveness, and service

We encourage children to notice, wonder, and reflect—whether through prayer, poetry, nature, or conversation.

✝️ Christian Roots, Open Hearts

As a Church of England school, our approach to spirituality is rooted in Christian values. But we welcome and celebrate children of all faiths and none. Our goal is to help every child grow spiritually in a way that’s personal, respectful, and meaningful.

We explore spirituality through:

  • Collective Worship
  • Religious Education
  • Reflection areas and displays
  • Creative curriculum links
  • Outdoor learning and nature walks

🌟 A Whole-School Approach

Spirituality is woven through our ethos, curriculum, and relationships. Staff model reflective practice, and children are encouraged to express their thoughts and feelings in safe, supportive ways.

We use visual prompts, reflective questions, and creative activities to help children explore:

  • Who am I?
  • What do I believe?
  • How do I treat others?
  • What brings me joy, peace, or hope?
