This half term our topic is β€œLet’s Explore the UK” 

Throughout this topic, the children will develop their understanding of the United Kingdom, including its geography, landscapes and key features. Through a range of engaging activities, they will build their knowledge of the world around them while developing skills across the curriculum.

    Children should wear their PE kit to school on these days (jogging bottoms, PE T-shirt, sweatshirt or hoodie, trainers/pumps). Please also send their coat and school jumper.

  • πŸ“– Reading Books: Sent home daily
    Children are expected to read every day. Please sign their Reading Log. Bug Club is also available onlineβ€”login details are in their book bag.

  • ✏️ Spelling Practice: New spellings are set every Friday on Spelling Shed.
    Weekly spelling tests take place on Tuesdays.

  • πŸ”’ Times Tables: Focus this half term is on 3Γ— and 4Γ— tables.
    Children should practise regularly using Times Tables Rock Stars and Hit the Button.


πŸ“š What We’re Learning

πŸ“– English

  • We will begin by reading Mrs Armitage on Wheels πŸš²πŸ“–. The children will write their own adventure stories by changing the character and mode of transport, using their imagination and creativity.
  • They will also write clear instructions on how to ride a bike, focusing on sequencing and using precise language πŸ“. We will continue to develop descriptive writing using adventurous vocabulary and a variety of sentence starters.
  • Spellings remain very important, so please continue to practise these regularly at home using Spelling Shed ⭐

Reading πŸ“–πŸ’¬

  • Reading continues to be a very important part of our learning and supports understanding across all subjects. Children should read at home each night and discuss what they have read to help develop comprehension and fluency.
  • Please remember to sign their Reading Log regularly so children can track their progress and achievements ⭐

πŸ”’ Mathematics

  • We will be learning about time and statistics β°πŸ“Š
  • The children will read time on analogue and digital clocks and learn about units of time such as days, months and hours. They will also collect and interpret data, creating pictograms, bar charts and tables, and answering questions about the information presented.
  • We will continue to develop confidence in applying Maths skills through problem solving and practical activities 🎲
 

🌍 Geography 

  • As part of our β€œLet’s Explore the UK” topic, we will develop our understanding of the geography of the United Kingdom.
  • We will learn about counties, land use and National Parks.
  • We will also use maps and develop skills such as reading 6-figure grid references.

 

✝️ R.E.

  • In RE, we will explore different faiths and beliefs within our country and community.
  • We will learn about how and why people follow their religions.
  • We will also begin to understand the importance of belief and belonging.
 

❀️ PSHE 

  • Our Jigsaw topic this half term is β€œChanging Me”.
  • We will learn about some of the changes that happen in the body. We will also talk about how to stay healthy and manage change positively.
 

🎡 Music

  • We will continue learning to play the ukulele 🎸.
  • The children will also begin to develop their understanding of musical notation. This will help build confidence in performance and musical skills.
 

πŸƒ PE

  • PE will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, and children should have their kit in school on these days πŸ‘Ÿ
  • We will take part in a coach-led gymnastics programme and develop our skills in rounders, focusing on teamwork, coordination and control πŸ’ͺ
  • Please ensure children have suitable kit. If your child has pierced ears, earrings must be removed before school or covered with plasters.

✏️ Year 3 Spelling List

These words are part of the Year 3 curriculum and help children build strong spelling habits. They include commonly used words, tricky spellings, and words that follow important patterns. Children practise these weekly to improve their writing fluency and confidence.

Each group introduces a mix of:

  • High-frequency words used in everyday writing

  • Words with silent letters, double consonants, or unusual endings

  • Vocabulary that supports topic work and reading comprehension

Homophones are words that sound the same but have different meanings and spellings. Learning homophones helps children:

  • Understand word meaning in context

  • Avoid common spelling mistakes

  • Improve reading and writing accuracy

For example:

  • peace (calm) vs. piece (a part of something)

  • weather (rain, sun, etc.) vs. whether (if something will happen)

Children practise these through matching games, sentence writing, and spelling challenges.
