Mathematics

At Lowerhouses CE Primary School, mathematics is seen as vital for the life opportunities of our children. We want all pupils to think mathematically, enabling them to reason, solve problems, and apply their skills confidently in a range of contexts. Our curriculum is designed to build fluency, deepen understanding, and encourage perseverance when tackling challenges.

✍️ Intent

  • Ensure all children develop the ability to reason mathematically by following lines of enquiry, making conjectures, and justifying their thinking with appropriate language.

  • Build fluency in the fundamentals of mathematics through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems.

  • Enable pupils to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.

  • Provide opportunities to solve both routine and non‑routine problems, breaking them down into manageable steps and persevering to find solutions.

📖 Implementation

  • We follow a mastery approach, teaching all pupils to their year group expectations, with challenge for the more able and support for those who need it.

  • Our curriculum is based on the White Rose Scheme, supplemented by resources such as Fluent in 5 and Rapid Reasoning.

  • Daily lessons are broken down into carefully planned small steps, using a concrete, pictorial, and abstract approach to gradually develop understanding.

  • Pupils experience varied practice with increasingly complex problems to strengthen conceptual understanding and recall.

  • Frequent use of TT Rockstars at school and home supports multiplication and division fluency.

  • Opportunities are seized for pupils to apply mathematical skills across the wider curriculum, showing understanding in different contexts.

🎯 Impact

  • Formative assessment is embedded in lessons through questioning, observation, in‑the‑moment marking, and challenge tasks.

  • Teachers record outcomes at the end of lessons or sequences of lessons.

  • Assessments are examined against Developmental Matters Statements in Early Years, working towards the Early Learning Goals and beyond.

  • End‑of‑term National Test Style (NTS) assessments provide further evidence of progress.

  • Misconceptions and gaps are identified and addressed promptly, ensuring the curriculum meets the needs of all pupils.
