π This Half Termβs Topic: Magical Mapping! πΊοΈ
This half term our topic is βMagical Mapping!β
Throughout this topic, the children will develop their understanding of maps, local geography and the world around them. They will explore how places are represented and learn key mapping skills through a range of engaging and practical activities across the curriculum.
This is a summary of some of the learning we will be covering.

π What Weβre Learning
π English
- We will be exploring a range of texts including Big, Bad Owl, The Disgusting Sandwich and Scaredy Squirrel π¦πΏοΈ. The children will retell these stories, write about characters and create their own stories.
- They will also develop their writing through instructions, adverts and speeches, as well as reading and writing explanations πβ¨
- Our class reading for pleasure will include the Percy the Park Keeper series π³π
- Spellings remain a very important part of Year 2, so please continue to practise these regularly at home β
π Reading
- Reading continues to be a very important part of our learning. It is important that children read every night at home and that you talk to them about what they have read to support their understanding.
- Please remember to sign their Reading Log so they can work towards their next reading certificate β
- π Little Wandle books must be returned every Monday morning.
π’ Mathematics
- We will be learning about time, statistics and position and direction β°ππ§
- The children will practise telling the time to oβclock, half past, quarter past and quarter to, and begin to build confidence in applying this in real-life contexts. They will also explore how to collect, record and interpret data using simple charts and tables.
- In addition, we will continue to develop our understanding of the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) and apply these skills to solve multi-step problems and missing number questions βββοΈβ
- The children will take part in a range of practical activities, reasoning tasks and problem-solving challenges to help deepen their understanding and build confidence in Maths π²β¨
π Other Areas of the Curriculum
πΊοΈGeography
- As part of our βMagical Mapping!β topic, we will focus on local geography and develop our mapping skills. We will learn how to read and create simple maps using symbols and keys. We will also use directional language to describe locations and routes.
π‘Design and Technology
- In DT, we will be learning about mechanisms and how things move. We will design and build our own Ferris wheel. We will explore how different parts work together to create movement.
πReligious Education
- In RE, we will explore the question βHow are symbols used to welcome new life?β. We will learn how babies are welcomed into Sikh, Christian and Muslim communities. We will also understand the importance of belonging to a community.
β½Physical Education πββοΈ
- PE will take place on Monday and Friday, and children should come to school in their PE kit on these days π
- We will be working with a sports coach from SM Sports, taking part in striking and fielding activities as well as gymnastics, helping to develop coordination, balance and teamwork skills πͺ
- Please ensure children have suitable footwear for PE. If your child has pierced ears, earrings must be removed before school or covered with plasters.
πPSHE
Our Jigsaw topic this half term is βChanging Meβ. We will learn about growing and how our bodies change. We will also talk about how to stay healthy and safe.
Children must wear PE kit and trainers/pumps. If they wear earrings, please remove them or provide plasters.
